28 December 2023

The new year 2024 will begin with the bright meteor shower of the Quadrantid. With good visibility, the frequency of the stream will reach 120 meteors per hour. When it will be possible to make the most cherished wish for the coming year, the press service of the Moscow Planetarium told.
The Quadrantid meteor shower will begin on Thursday, December 28, and last until January 12. But the peak of activity can be observed on the night of Wednesday, January 3. That's when, with a clear sky, South Ural residents will be able to see up to 1-2 meteors per minute, or up to 120 per hour.
The Quadrantid meteor shower got its name from the astronomically obsolete constellation of the Wall Quadrant. Now the radiant of the stream is located under the handle of the Dipper of the Big Dipper in the constellation Volopas.
The starfall will be best visible from midnight to dawn on the northeastern horizon of the sky.
Also on Wednesday, January 3, the largest solar disk in 2024 will light up in the sky. It is on this day that the Earth will be in perihelion, that is, at the point closest to the Sun in its orbit. The celestial body will look 3% larger than at the beginning of July, when this distance is maximum.
