Specialists have completed flight tests of the first device of the Sphere multi—satellite grouping - the Skif-D broadband Internet system demonstrator, launched more than a year ago, according to the website of the Academician M. F. Reshetnev Information Satellite Systems company.
"The stage of orbital testing of the experimental communication system Skif-D with the spacecraft of the same name, created by Reshetnev, has been completed," the publication says.
It is noted that during the year of operation in orbit, the Russian equipment on board the satellite received flight qualifications. In addition, the device control and Internet access technologies were tested.
"The maximum data transfer rate via Skif-D, which was achieved during communication sessions, was 6.5 megabits per second," the company stressed.
The Sphere project is designed to provide Russians with the Internet of Things, as well as communications in remote areas, in particular in the Arctic. The developers place special emphasis on providing communications on the Northern Sea Route. The "sphere" can be compared with the already functioning Elon Musk Starlink system — with the difference that the Russian satellite system will have fewer satellites, and the functionality is planned to be broader.
The first unit of the group, the Skif-D technology demonstrator, was launched on October 22, 2022 from the Vostochny cosmodrome.
